My private struggle

As most of you have followed me for awhile knows, I am divorced and have shared custody of my two older children with my first husband.  I am remarried and have two more children with my new husband. We are kind of what is becoming the new "normal" for families and also what they call "blended".  Relations with my ex since the divorce has been anything but pleasant and a constant struggle for myself and my husband and I as a couple.  It is difficult for some people to move beyond hurt, that then  festers into bitterness. I have always put my children forefront on any decisions with my ex, but sometimes even my own personal emotions and feelings get in the way of doing the right thing.

A year ago my husband and I decided that we would change some things with the current parenting schedule, to not only give some normalcy to the children's schedule over the school year, but put some boundaries on any future "daddy dramas".  Well that was like taking a bag of lit fireworks and throwing them into a pool of gasoline!!   So my little change to my current schedule turned into a full blown, war waging custody battle that turned into Dad asking for primary custody. All sorts of accusations were spewed out putting a major microscope onto my life, my marriage and my parenting.  Not something you really want, even if you think you have the perfect situation.  Truth is - there is no one out there who does, and when you get attorneys, mediators, and therapists involved, they are absolutely fueled by any flaws, mistakes, and road bumps you've had or have.

Sadly to say, nothing really went as we had planned and now I face more attorneys, more court, more therapists, more damage to two little children who just want to love and be loved with what's left of their family. I have gone through this past year clinging to God.  Steadfast in prayer.  Hoping for things to be made to what I feel is "right" in my mind.  It has been a tough journey for me to go through this feeling like God is telling me "no" and having to wait and figure out what exactly He has planned for us.

Despite all the bad in court and the system and all the hurt and ugliness that has planted itself so heavily in my life, I see I have so many blessings to focus on.  It seems that hard times are unavoidable, even as a Christian.  It's so easy to get caught up in self-pity and feel the unfairness of trials in your life.  It is easy to think that because you do so many right things, that you should be exempt from anything hard or painful.  Yet I'm learning that way of thinking is so wrong.  That as Christians, life may really get hard sometimes.  We live in a world that is broken and breaking and it will test how faithful we will be to a faith that is mocked, criticized and attacked throughout the world. I am not a Christian because it gives me insurance for a perfect life, and a free ticket to heaven.  I am a Christian because I need God to help me make sense of this world. To give me hope when there doesn't seem to be any left. The Lord has been my rock throughout this ordeal.  I have tried to find the blessings in the little things.  To look around me and see where God has said "yes" to so many things in my life, and that HE has huge plans for me and my family.  It's hard to be patient and wait when you want to throw a fit, fists pounding, and your heart is screaming.  Sometimes it feels as though I will never have any peace in my life.  But yet, I see so many other people that are hurting and suffering and broken, and just pray that they can find this freedom that I feel I have found in Jesus Christ. Giving your cares, your worries, and your tears to Him, is the most healing way to cope.  Jesus has your back, if you just ask, pray and give it all to Him.

Homemade Beauty

homemademamas.net
If there's one thing, or things that could break my budget, it's beauty products.  There doesn't seem to be enough money for the good stuff, and the affordable stuff is just a waste of money.  I started to think that there might be some homemade products out there you could replicate, and maybe get better benefits than the pricier versions.  Some of the following I have personally tried, some I have not.  I have also included links to some places I found recipes and other bloggers/websites that have figured this stuff out already.  (I'm a little slow!)
If you know of anything that has worked great for you and saved you money, pass it along! I'd love to learn and share!

Deep Conditioners for your hair:
Great for dry, damaged hair, to put back moisture and shine!
1.  Avocado Deep Conditioner Hair Mask- 1 small jar of mayonnaise and 1/2 avocado.  Mix ingredients, smooth into head working to the ends,  Use shower cap or plastic wrap to seal body heat in and leave on 20 minutes.
2.  Mayonnaise Your Hair - Apply 1/2 cup of mayonnaise to dry hair, work in thoroughly, cover your head with plastic,  and let set for 15 minutes. {I tried this this morning, and it worked great.  The smell isn't very pleasant, but it's gone once you wash and dry.}
3.  Olive Oil Hair Mask - Mix 2 tablespoon honey and 3 tablespoon olive oilApply to head cover with plastic wrap and set for 30 minutes..
Do-it-your-self eye/lip makeup remover.  This is pretty much the same ingredients for homemade baby wipes, just different measurements.
Link to 14 body and hand sugar scrubs.    I consider this stuff a must in the summer, especially when you use self-tanning creams, and the chlorine and sun is so drying to your skin. These are all great handmade gift ideas too.
Homemade teeth whitening
Whiten teeth with hydrogen peroxide.  Mix equal parts peroxide and water, and swish for a few minutes.  Teeth get brighter, and it's great for your gums.  I was so pleased with how clean and "happy" my mouth felt after doing this. Teeth were whiter too! I grew up knowing you could also brush your teeth with baking soda.  Not a great taste, but it does work in a pinch as toothpaste, and as a tooth polish and whitener.

HomemadeMamas.net has lots of other really great homemade beauty ideas.  Take a look into your bathroom and try to see where you can save big money on beauty products by making them yourself.   You can also venture over to Pinterest, and find tons of pins related to homemade beauty. You can see a few of mine, and follow me over at Pinterest, here.

Save on Tickets to Disney's The Lion King

Disney's Broadway production of The Lion King is being presented by Theater League in Wichita on September 4th-30th.  Tickets range from $40-$75. (Balcony-Floor seats).  Theater League emailed me to let me know that they are offering some great deals on tickets if you get the group rates.

Here's quoting what Craig from Theater League shared with me about group rates:

We have wonderful seating available in the last two weeks of the run (September 18-23 and 25-30) with matinee performances on Saturday, Sunday and a special Thursday matinee on September 27 at 1pm. Group discounted pricing for 15 or more is available on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evening performances.

The price for groups is $72 for Orchestra L-FF/Balcony A-C; $62 per person for Orchestra GG-JJ/Balcony D-F; and $40 for Balcony G-H. On Thursday the 27th, we have special pricing for 30 or more during the 1pm performance. The price for the larger group is $60, $50 and $30 respectively.

That's a big savings overall with great seats and dates available.

I have let Craig know that if there are any great deals or specials available on individual tickets that my readers would definitely be interested, and he's going to keep me in the loop if there is anything else I can bring you! So keep watching for that as we get closer to show time!

Thanks Theater League for passing this money saving tip my way!

It's Summer! Why it's easier to be "cheap".

Well I was realizing the other day that if you want to be/live frugally, summer, is technically the best season of the year to do it.

How?  Why?  Here's my list to help you look at these dog days in ways that can stretch your dollar farther, and bring you to the road of contentment in the process.
Source

Less Makeup.
Take advantage of your summer glow and wear less makeup than usual.  It's all going to melt off as soon as you step outside anyway, so may as well not wear as much.  One of my little tricks is to wear less foundation, and just dot it in the places where I need it.  Which is basically my T-zone, (forehead, nose, chin), and under my eyes.  Moisturize, (make sure you have one with an SPF or add one to your moisturizer) and then dot and blend.  Add all over color if you still feel pale with a bronzing powder. Sweep a soft shade of color on your lids, mascara on your lashes, a little blusher and go.  Maybe even go with a little gloss on your lips just to polish you up one step further.  This will save you time, and money as I know for me, this is cutting about 40% out of my normal makeup routine.

Garden Fresh Goodness.
If you grow your own food you can appreciate the benefits of growing your own food.  There's plenty.  I love all the meal options that open up with just growing zucchini alone. Get a big harvest of tomatoes, (which we are about to), and you can start making sauces, salsas, salads.  Tasty and can't beat walking out your door to get what you need almost whenever you need it.  If you don't have a green thumb, seasonal fruits and veggies are a lot cheaper this time of year, so you can save more money on your food bill if you focus on cooking recipes that involve seasonal foods.

Less Clothing.
Source
No I'm not supporting nudist colonies or advocating letting it all hang out.  But because it's so hot, your need for the extra clothing you would usually need in winter or cooler weather is non-essential. Coats, sweaters, jeans, boots, are all considerably more expensive than tee shirts, tanks, shorts and flip flops.  You can clothe yourself and your kids for $10-12 per outfit new this time of year much easier than in colder weather. You can also hang out in your swimming suit most of the day, eliminating the need for fancy outfits, which if you are going to be at the pool this time of year makes most sense anyway.

Cheap Entertainment.
With the exception of {I call them "fancy"} family vacations falling around this time of year.  If you choose not to go all out and travel big this year, you can stay home and have a pretty good time quite afford ably.  Our YMCA membership has provided tons of entertainment for our family just for the swimming alone. Summer is more time for more sports, classes and activities, for less than if you went with other clubs or associations.
If you happen to have a neighborhood swimming pool, even better!! Your HOA dues add up to just pennies per day for your benefit of residency.
Sometimes it just too hot to go outside, and that's when staying in and renting a redbox or watching netflix is the great, cheap thing to do.
Pinterest alone could entertain you the whole summer with it's loads of crafting, cooking, and repurposing ideas that are most to all family/kid appropriate.
Summer evenings are perfect for running in the yard, taking walks, catching fireflies, and roasting marshmallows in the backyard firepit, chiminea or on the grill!

Yes, I love summer!! Keep it easy, fun, and low key for a stress free, inexpensive time of togetherness, making memories that will last forever!! These are just a small portion of what I could think of, what kinds of things does your family do in the summer that is inexpensive and fun?
