Get Involved in the Community

source
There are two opportunities coming up in the month of April for you to get involved in the Wichita community, helping others, and making our city a better place.

The first is Wichita's Downtown Clean-up Day.  This April 14th from 8:30-noon.  Projects include power-washing sidewalks, painting curbs, painting parking stalls, street and sidewalk sweeping, decal and graffiti removal, garden bed maintenance and landscaping projects, and picking up trash. All supplies will be provided by the City of Wichita, and a light breakfast and then lunch at the Old Mill Tasty Shop will be provided for volunteers.  Sign up is now, and projects are first come first serve, all other volunteers will be assigned to trash pickup.  This will be a great way to help beautify our city.  What a great project for families to get involved with together.  See more info and who to email to sign up, here.

The second is LoveWichita.org.  Over 40 churches from across the city will be joining together to serve the community.  There are about 150 projects across the city that will be completed on the weekend of April 28th, 2012.  Check the website to see if your church is involved, and if it isn't or you don't have a church home, you can still sign up and join one of them on a project.  This is such a great opportunity to bring your skills and resources to bless the lives of your neighbors. My husband and I will be bringing our small group along side our church for this event.  It's sure to be life changing for lots of people.  Sign up ends on April 3rd, and there is a cost to get involved.  Check it out here.

International Cash Mob Day, Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Wichita's very own "cash mob" is set to take over Delano tomorrow, Saturday, March 24th.  A "Cash Mob" is a group of people who assemble at a local business to all buy items at that business.Meant to support the community and a local-owned business. Wichita's Cash Mob is set to happen in the shopping district of Delano, a revitalized area of town known for it's locally owned shopping options.
The first Cash Mob was started in Buffalo, NY by Chris Smith, a blogger and engineer in August, 2011. He organized more than 100 people to buy products from a wine store.  He describes these mobs as a "reverse Groupon", that are meant to make a "chance for business owners to begin building a longer-term relationship with customers".

Since it's inception it has taken off in other cities. Not only as a chance to help fledgling mom and pop owned businesses have a second chance in this toilet bowl economy, but it has opened up a whole new social network of people doing good for the community.  Money is spent and friends are made.  7 months since it's first mob, Saturday, March 24th, 2012 is now going to be recognized as "International Cash Mob Day", with cash mobs going on in 170 cities around the US tomorrow, and in Sydney, Toronto, and Mission B.C.

There are Cash Mob rules, and three main rules when you are at the mob, being:  1. spend $20, 2. Meet at least 3 new people, 3. Have fun!!    There are also rules and guidelines for starting your own Cash Mob.

So do Cash Mob's really make a difference?  I would have to say yes, so far it seems that no one is complaining as local businesses especially appreciate any support and influx in business. One business who had been Cash Mobbed in Cleveland had stated that it was equal to a Christmas shopping day in business for them.  I would imagine also, that the amount of repeat shoppers after such an event would be fairly decent as well, since all those involved obviously care about local businesses to start with.

So speaking of Mob and local businesses, I received an interesting phone message/recording today from Dandurand Drugs at Central and Rock.  Poor Dandurand Drugs, all the hoop-la and mobs of people taking over their parking lot due to some fancy chicken nuggets has apparently left no room for their normal customers.  I can see how this could be a catch-22 for them, but mostly, hardest hit in their pharmacy services. So much so that they are now offering to deliver your meds for FREE so that you don't avoid them all together. Dandurand is a locally owned Wichita business that has been in our community for quite some time.  I have always appreciated their wonderful selection of gift, home decor and accessories and jewelry, not to mention they are one of the few "compounding" pharmacies left in the area.  So while you are thinking about cash mobs, and maybe while you're waiting in line to do some chicken eating, don't forget to check out the great locally owned businesses that surround that corner of the city as well, and spread a little of your money there too.  It doesn't take an International Day to support a local business, it's just a way of thinking, and doing a little investigating before you spend  your all important dollar.

So what do you think?  Are Cash Mobs a great idea, or is the idea a little too trendy or offensive to you?
Whether you decide to go tomorrow or not, make it a new policy to try to spend your money at a locally owned business at least once per month.  It can make a big difference for our community.

Rhea Lana's Sale details, start consigning your kids clothing

Hello Spring! I am so glad you are finally here! This spurt of recent warm weather has me, and the kids,
shuffling though drawers and totes pulling out the short sleeves and the shorts and skirts.
Now is a great time to start going through those closets and taking inventory of what your kids are going to need to get them through the next two seasons.
Make sure as you sort you make a donate pile, and a consignment pile. Consignment is a great way to make your kids clothing an investment, and helps you to reduce and reuse helping out the environment as well.

Amanda at Rhea Lana's Consignment event has sent me some information and tips for consigning for her upcoming consignment event.

As a consignor with Rhea Lana's you can enjoy perks such as:

  • an early shopping pass for the private pre-sale event
  • access to their online computerized inventory system - no handwriting any tags!
  • Get your check on pick-up day, and all items are GUARANTEED if any thing shows up missing, Rhea Lana's will pay you for those missing items.

The average family with three children saves $600-$1200 each year by shopping consignment. And the average consignor earns about $750 per year at Rhea Lana's events.

Makes sense to me.  So here's how to do it.  Sign up to be a consignor at wichita.rhealana.com.  At the homepage click on SIGN UP TO CONSIGN in the top right hand corner. There is then a video that will walk you through the next steps.

Start gathering your items, and make sure to follow the tips given at the Rhea Lana's website.  There are special, easy instructions for tagging and preparing your items. If you have questions through the process just email Amanda at Amanda@rhealana.com.  Also check out their facebook fan page.

Don't miss out also on my exclusive interview with Amanda last year when I asked her all about being a working from home Mom with a successful business, from my WAHM series. Her story is very inspirational.

Also, don't forget to read my personal tips for consigning here, and for buying consignment.
Happy sorting!!

Having a 1 Corinthians family.

1 Corinthians 13:4–8a
(New International Version
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

A popular verse for weddings, God put this verse in my brain this weekend to apply to my family.  Why is it that we are prone to treating those we love most the worst at times?  Yet those wounds from the daggers we throw at the hearts of our loved ones are the ones that heal the slowest and leave the biggest scars.  There are no vows to be taken as parents.  The role of Mom or Dad is blessed upon us, sometimes before we are really ready.  The first child is the one that gets to be the test child and the practice round for all the children that come after, unless you are some sort of specially trained child expert and even then I'm sure that mistakes have been made by them as well.

We are getting ready to start a parenting study this weekend with our small group, which I know will be more about myself than my children.  I cannot help but think that placing this verse in my heart, as a foundation to my learning, will keep me open, not only to what God wants for my family, but to what God wants me to know about my own actions, and responses as a parent.

What about making this verse as a "vow" personally, on how to love your family?  Kids, parents, siblings, and spouse.  No, we can't be perfect, but Love never fails.  I promise to Love my family with patience, kindness, without envy or pride.  I vow not to be rude, or selfish.  To watch my temper, to forgive and forget. Protecting, trusting and persevering through even the toughest of trials. Because love never fails.
