New stats show pool safety is still a top concern

The CPSC has released new statistics on drowning, near-drowning and entrapment incidents.  "CPSC's new data show that the number of drownings and near-drownings involving children younger than five are still a serious public health issue," said CPSC Chairman Inez M. Tenenbaum.

 Their statistic show:
An annual average of 383 pool and spa-related drownings for children younger than 15 occurred from 2006 to 2008; about 76 percent of the reported fatalities involved children younger than five. (cpsc.gov)

Based on reported statistics, 96% of victims involved in a submersion incident will die. Fatalities usually occur the day of the drowning event (72%). For the victims who survive the event, most will succumb to their injuries within a week (24%). Only 4% of near drowning victims will survive beyond a week, and many will have severe injuries and require intensive medical care.(cpsc.gov)

72% of fatalities and 55%  of injuries of children occurred in residential pools/spas.  (cpsc.gov)

Poolsafely.gov is CPSC's public safety campaign aimed at educating parents, children, pool operators and state and local officials.  Find options for safety systems, videos on creating a safe swimming environment, latest recalls, links to professionals in your area and even a video for kids on pool safety and family fun in the water.

You can also go to websites like abcpoolsafety.org,  download a pdf of tips from the American Red Cross, and visit the American Academy of Pediatrics for their tips for water and sun safety. They even have advice on heat stress and boating safety.

"Whether it's providing swimming lessons, installing a pool alarm, or just keeping a close eye on them while they're in the water-all of these steps will help prevent an incident." said Janet Evans, five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. "As a parent, I know how important it is that I take every precaution to ensure the safety of my children in and around the water,"(cpsc.gov)

Easy, fun and frugal ideas for Father's Day

tipjunkie.com
Showing Dad you love him this Father's Day doesn't have to break your budget.  Sometimes the most thoughtful gifts are the most memorable. I scoured the web this afternoon to find the best ideas for easy, fun and inexpensive Father's Day gifts.  Have your own memorable gift idea?  Share your gift ideas below!

1.  Make him an appreciation video.  Most kids you turn on a camera and the entertainment flows.  Get the kids to create a skit, or song or tribute video for Dad, and then premiere it for him on Father's Day.

2. Fill jar(s) with Dad's favorite candy or snacks.  You could even bake up a snack mix or homemade granola.  Have the kids decorate it with puff paint or glass paint. Stickers or even scrapbook paper glued and/or modge podged on could do.  Tie it with a bow.  Mom, put a little love note at the bottom letting your husband know how much you appreciate his hard work and dedication to your family.  He can take it to work and set it on his desk for mid-day snack attacks. Check out these free Dad's Day Printables from Tipjunkie.com

3.  Decorate a canvas apron.  Decorate with a theme related to what he does best in the kitchen, like grilling, or breakfast.  You could cut felt pieces into food shapes or cooking utensils.  Use Fabric Markers to write "Best Dad Ever",  or have the kids use fabric paint to put hand and/or foot prints all over. Get creative! Bhg.com

4.  Make handprint art.  With date and age.  Frame it for his office or "mancave".

5.  Frame a piece of your children's custom artwork  Put a picture of them in the corner that shows the age they were when they did it.

6.  Have the kids make a photo collage of all of Dad's favorite things.  Print of pictures of the kids, pets, and family.  Maybe even a picture of his car or him doing his favorite things.  Use magazines to fill in between the photos.

7.  Let Dad have the day off.  If the kids are old enough, have them take some of his weekend chores for him:  mowing the yard,  wash his car, take care of a handyman project.  Let him know it's his day for rest of relaxation.  Send him out to do his favorite thing: golfing, etc.

Hope your family has a great Father's Day weekend!  Check out my previous post for specials around town, and follow my Facebook feeds for any new specials that come in as the weekend progresses!

My Publisher free mini book

This morning I went and made my free "mini" photo book from My Publisher.  If you happened to miss it on my Wednesday Deals post it's a free "mini" photo book that measures 3.5" X 2.75".  It's good for up to 21 photos, and you can have color or black and white, or both. It'll even make some color photos into black and white for you.

I had a little trouble getting this to work out for me, and ended up making two books, so here's some advice to get you going so you won't have to take as long as I did.  First, so you understand, there is some software installation required to use this publisher. Doesn't take that long, and my husband hasn't yelled at me yet, so it's all good. When you go into the MyPublisher program to start, in one of the first windows to open it asks if you would like help getting started.  Check the no box, to select the Custom Publisher Option. Then when you select your book size make sure you pick "Mini".  You'll have the chance to enter your coupon code at the check out to get your free book with free shipping.  Then you can start uploading your photos.  Another tip is to make sure you have some good quality photos. I had a few that were from my iphone that did not allow me to zoom to fit the pages the way I would've liked, due to the chance the picture would have a blurry appearance.  I do believe it will let you go ahead and do it anyway, with warnings, as I left my cover photo zoomed in a tad.

I wasn't horribly impressed with this program.  Having never made a photo book online before I had my own ideas on what I thought it should have, (like ability to add frames and text to photos.)  Overall it is low on the custom thrills end. If you want photos edited and with text, I love Picnik.  Edit them there, save them to your photo files, and then upload them to this program.

In case you missed it, here is the link to the facebook page for My Publisher, where you submit your email address.  They will then email your one time use coupon code to you.  These codes expire on 7/11.  You can also get a Father's Day sale coupon code after you install for 25% off orders over $50, and 50% off orders over $100. Have fun, I can't wait to get mine, and will post pictures of it when I do!

This is not a paid endorsement.
